Illinois to Missouri

Another early start today to go see Abraham Lincoln’s house where he lived in Springfield Illinois while practising as a successful lawyer before he became president.

The house is free to access which was a surprise. You have a 20 min guided tour. Now we have to factor in here that Abe Lincoln remains one of the most famous presidents the USA has ever had. His achievements both pre presidency and during term are simply amazing, so of course Americans see him in the same light as royalty. Cue the hundreds of questions from the other tour members. “So how much furniture in this room is original?” “Can I touch it”, “So how much in this room…” and on the questions went. Nice to see, very well presented and great since I have been reading all about Abraham Lincoln in a biography of his life.

So once the tour was do e, guess what? Yup, more rain, and off we went down Route 66 to cross into Missouri.

What a long trek in rain, wind and the rare glimpse of sun. I have to say that my bike gear is fab. Plastic over trousers are my new best friend, as is a cozy Merino wool snood.

Mr Fogg was impressive. Navigating six scary lanes of busy traffic around large metropolis St Louis, coping with high winds and blinding rain, several hours of bike travel and we finally arrived at a little haven in Cuba, MO.

Now for that jacuzzi……
