On 66 out of Carthage we stopped to take a photo of this iconic drive-in, only to be met by the 1 out of 100 American. Everyone else has been amazing, this guy however came out shouting and waving his arms telling us to go away, get off his land and stop taking pictures, nice. Mrs Fogg notices the sticker pertaining to be a member of a certain gun association, so we high tailed it JIC!

After that experience it was nice to come across Galina Kansas and the petrol station on 66, with the truck that inspired CARS, the Pixar cartoon.

So after a nice relaxed lunch, more 66.

24 Hours From Tulsa

image
Sorry guys but we couldn’t resist although we’re about 8 hours away, but then that wouldn’t make a good song would it?

A restful night until the forked lightning at 2am and Mrs Fogg listening out for the Tornado warnings. Fortunately the sun is shining today as we cut from Missouri through Kansas and into Oklahoma.

It was fantastic to chat with the manager last night and we have educated her on the 80s parody of Spitting Image and Ronald Reagan, which she dutifully went off to find on that there YooHoo Tube.

So come on, sing and think of us on the road, Mrs Fogg sniffling and me sneezing heavily into my visor, cos we’re only 24 hours from Tulsa…..

The road gets rougher from here.

1947 and Dr Who

image
Our destination today was Carthage, Missouri following Route 66 most of the way. Missouri is a beautiful state. Lush green pastures, rolling hills and lots of houses that evoke past scenes from the TV show “Little House on the Prairie”

As we drove along empty Route 66 you could smell the trees, pollen, fragrant flowers and the occasional farm smells. Despite being sat on a noisy lump of metal pulling 1600cc, amazingly, I could still hear birdsong.

So, on then to our arrival at the Boots Motel. I found this place on Trip Advisor on the recommendations of previous guests. It was not all it seemed.

The front looks like a run down tired old 1930’s building, cracked concrete with grass growing through and tatty frontage. If you we’re on the hunt for a place to stay and appearance was the only draw, you’d keep driving.

But no, not me, off we went into the Reception trusting the reviews. Oh my. This place was built by Mr Boot in 1932, first as a little gas station then expanded to be a luxury hotel (motels as a concept did not exist then you know). Rooms cost 2 dollars and 50 cents a night back in the 1930’s, and that apparently was expensive.

The rooms themselves are in the process of being refurbished by the present new owners who bought a year ago and have been open only 9 months. The whole project is set to take a couple of years and is being done to a set time period. 1947 to be exact, so no TVs in the rooms, just old fashioned big chunky radios. Clark Gable and one of his friends stayed here in one of the rooms just before ( or after?) the war.

So how do we know all this and what’s the connection to Dr Who you may well ask??

Well, check in took over an hour with the very very friendly manager on site. She gave us the full history, took us on a very detailed tour of every room (there are 12 on site), the refurbished authentic 1947 ones and those waiting to be refurbished. we were told all about the roof, the 1930’s building opposite, the town, the civil war battles.
Oh and she is a huge fan of Dr Who. We learnt this thanks to Mr Fogg who was on fine performance with his usual quips and charm, particularly when asked to guess the cost of the room to rent, 2 dollars 50 was his reply. Our lively host quickly suggested he needed the Tardis to come back in time to 1947.

So the longest check in to a quirky property ran by a quirky lady who wants to chat more with Mr Fogg as he is, I quote “better than watching You Tube”

Priceless. I find all these cool places you know. Mr Fogg is quietly groaning now, especially after a long shattering drive of over 7 hours covering 204.5 miles and faced with having to chat half the night.

Tomorrow only approx 130ish?

Legolas Meets the Rocker

What a fantastic day, this is what a Harley is all about, blue skies open roads and chic in the arm chair behind, heaven.

As you can see we made it to Fanning Missouri, home of the worlds’s largest rocking chair (as features on Billy Connolllys Route66) and inside this emporium is a and archery range where the Missus and I had a little play, after a few attempts Mrs Fogg managed to miss the attendants (they scattered and screamed). Not wishing to brag but I managed a bulls eye (granted it was on the next lane).

This is bliss.

Illinois to Missouri

Another early start today to go see Abraham Lincoln’s house where he lived in Springfield Illinois while practising as a successful lawyer before he became president.

The house is free to access which was a surprise. You have a 20 min guided tour. Now we have to factor in here that Abe Lincoln remains one of the most famous presidents the USA has ever had. His achievements both pre presidency and during term are simply amazing, so of course Americans see him in the same light as royalty. Cue the hundreds of questions from the other tour members. “So how much furniture in this room is original?” “Can I touch it”, “So how much in this room…” and on the questions went. Nice to see, very well presented and great since I have been reading all about Abraham Lincoln in a biography of his life.

So once the tour was do e, guess what? Yup, more rain, and off we went down Route 66 to cross into Missouri.

What a long trek in rain, wind and the rare glimpse of sun. I have to say that my bike gear is fab. Plastic over trousers are my new best friend, as is a cozy Merino wool snood.

Mr Fogg was impressive. Navigating six scary lanes of busy traffic around large metropolis St Louis, coping with high winds and blinding rain, several hours of bike travel and we finally arrived at a little haven in Cuba, MO.

Now for that jacuzzi……

Caught on Camera for the second time this trip, Mrs Fogg with marker pen In hand writing graffiti in Cuba Missouri, no doubt in preparation for the Cadillac ranch in Texas.

Today saw another rain soaked day covering 203 miles from Springfield Illinois to here and an opportunity to see the worlds largest rocking chair.

Tonight however at the Wagon Wheel Motel on 66 we will be enjoying the luxury of a personal jacuzzi to aid the weary travellers.

Hello Wabbit – For Mrs Fink

20130523-141216.jpg

Touring Route66 on Day 3 from Springfield to Cuba Missouri we happened along the home of one Mr Abe (Mrs Fogg will tell you more later) and then again in the pouring rain (boo). This afternoon we happened upon Henry’s Rabbit Ranch and met the wonderful Rich Henry, such a wonderful and friendly guy. He takes in wescue wabbits including the uber huge and friendly “Big Red” (sadly departed)..

Outside are VW Wabbits (US version of the Golf) turned upside down Cadillac Ranch stylee.

Such a cool place with such a nice friendly guy.

Now where is that pesky wabbit.

What’s for Dinner?

image
Dinner at Route 66 Hotel sounded good. See the menu.

What came??

Lump of pork, mashed potatoes covered in white gravy with black bits in (body?) and a cup of sweet corn.

Trades description Act exist in the US? Clearly not.

Mad as hatters we’ve come back for breakfast. Eggs on toast. Wonder what will come out?

Next stop President Lincolns House.
